Editorial Review:
Product Description: SteriPEN is located on the coast of Maine in the town of Blue Hill. SteriPEN employees greet each day by arriving to work in a spacious barn. The atmosphere is very relaxed where employees are welcome to grow a vegetable or herb garden. Miles Maiden is Hydro-Photons founder and inventor of the SteriPEN. Hydro-Photon, Inc. was founded with a simple purpose: to develop ultraviolet technology, as is used in municipal water treatment plants, for use in a personal, portable device that would provide the user with safe drinking water anywhere. Hydro-Photon received its first SteriPEN patent in 1999, followed by patents in 2000 and 2003. It kills viruses, bacteria and protozoaincluding Giardia and Cryptosporidiumin seconds. SteriPEN is easy to use. SteriPEN provides a system pack which includes a SteriPEN, Pre-Filter and 1 Liter BottleSteriPEN. The Classic UV Light Water Purifier SteriPEN is the only portable batch water purifier that uses Ultraviolet (UV) light to destroy waterborne microbes.
Product Description: Great for hiking and camping, this handheld water purifier destroys viruses, bacteria, and common protozoa. It weighs just 3.6 ounces with two non-rechargeable, disposable batteries (included) and purifies 16 ounces of water in 48 seconds, or 32 ounces in 90 seconds. The purifier employs ultraviolet light (UV) to destroy the DNA of microorganisms, making them unable to reproduce and cause illness. It's effective against outdoor microbes like giardia and cryptosporidium; pathogens that cause diarrhea, dysentery, hepatitis, and Legionnaire's Disease; household germs such as bird flu, E. coli, and salmonella; staph and strep; and natural-disaster risks like botulism, cholera, smallpox, and typhoid.
No pumping, no chemicals, no test strips, no timekeeping, no lubricating, and no replacement filters are required. All that is required is to push the water purifier's button (once for 32 ounces, twice for 16 ounces), place the pen-like lamp in clear water, and stir until an indicator light turns green. Water has no aftertaste after being purified. Measuring 6.1 inches long, the purifier comes with a nylon case and a user's guide. It exceeds U.S. Environmental Protection Agency guidelines for testing microbiological water purifiers.

Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/RHP0TXAPXG7AG I used this for 7 weeks in Central America. Never got sick (it worked?), and LOVED to be able to drink the "local" water!
As a water economist with strong interest in development economics, I was also "professionally" pleased :)

i'm extremely happy with my steripen. I just returned from a six night camping trip during which i used it for the first time. Having read reviews here before going out, i was worried about it going through batteries too fast. I put 2 new cr123 batteries in it before going out and took along 2 as a spare; ended up not needing the spares at all. It purified all the water for 2 people, including water used for making coffee/tea and cooking, for 6 nights on one set of batteries. I have no idea ... Read More

I bought the steriPEN in the summer of 2008 and tested it the day i received it for functionality. It worked. About 10 months later i tested it again but it didn't light up anymore. I figured i needed to change the batteries. After all, even sitting on my bookshelf for 10 months, away from heat and sunlight, can drain a battery?
I forgot about the steriPEN until seven months later when i was leaving the country again and figured having this water purifier would be helpful... so i bought ... Read More

I've only tried this Steripen twice - in the kitchen with already clean water just to see what it would do. Seems to function - to the extent that I can tell.
